Silver-studded Blue

First Silver-studded Blues of 2021 seen yesterday, Monday 7th June.

A plea to all visitors to Prees Heath: please make sure you park close to the side of the track as the two houses at the end of the track require access to large vehicles, lorries and, if the need arises, emergency vehicles. There have been incidents of late when people have parked towards the middle of the track, thereby preventing access, and I have had to involve the Police. This is unacceptable and potentially very serious. If there is no space available please park at the Pay and Display car park by the A41/A49 roundabout, walk back along the western side of the A49 about 50 yards, cross the road and enter the reserve by the Shropshire Way signpost.

Stonechat

3 Stonechat seen on the East of Runway heathery area on 4th June. Previously when we have seen Stonechat on the reserve it has been earlier in the year and they have probably been on passage somewhere else. This year, however, we wonder if they are here to breed.

Yellowhammer

20th May 2021 - Yellowhammer flight photographs by John Hawkins.

Silver-studded Blue caterpillars

These two photos were taken by Nigel Ball on 26th April. They show Silver-studded Blue caterpillars attended by Black Ants. We think they are the third instar. The caterpillars will moult one more time to become a fourth instar, after which it will pupate.

26th April 2021 5 Silver-studded blue caterpillars attended by ants, all on one ants' nest, eating heather and gorse. Probably 3rd instar.

24th April 2021 - Robin, Yellowhammer, Wren and Rabbit.

22nd April 2021: Grey Heron,  Stonechat, Skylark,  Kestrel,  Swallow,  Rabbits, Green Tiger Beetle and Common Heath moth.

19th April 2021  - Willow Warbler singing well near the reserve gates.

19th April 2021 - Wheatear on control tower field, probably on passage north.

25th October 2020 Small Copper butterfly seen by Sharon Garforth.
